If you want to know whether your SEO and marketing is actually working, you need to know where you show up on Google. This week’s Marketing Monday Task walks you through how to check your Google search visibility and understand what your potential customers see before they ever click on your website.

How to check your online Google Search Ranking

Why Google Search Ranking Matters

Before someone becomes a customer, they become a searcher. In fact, 68% of all online experiences begin with a search engine (BrightEdge). And when they do search?

  • 75% of users never scroll past the first page (Digital Marketing Institute)

  • The top 3 organic results get 54% of all clicks (Ahrefs)

  • Even moving from position 8 to position 3 can increase traffic by over 250%

If you don’t know where you rank, you don’t know what opportunities you’re missing, or who’s beating you. This week’s Monday Marketing Task is about taking the guesswork out and learning how to check your Google search ranking properly.

Your Task This Week: Check Where You Show Up on Google

Step 1: Search Your Business Category/Industry/Service + Location

Open an incognito window (this removes personalized search bias), and us a search phrase that applies to you, such as:

Google is showing the real picture of how easily customers can find you.

Step 2: Look for Yourself in the Results

What appears first?

  • Your website

  • Your Google Business Profile

  • Your Facebook or Instagram pages

  • Your competitors

Take note of anything above you, because those businesses are currently winning your visibility.

Step 3: Check Your Google Business Profile Strength

Your GBP influences whether you show up in maps or local pack results. Log in here to review it: https://www.google.com/business/

Check for:

  • Up-to-date hours

  • Correct location

  • Recent photos or posts

  • Reviews (make sure to respond!)

Step 4: Compare With Competitors

Who shows up above you? Why?

  • More reviews?

  • Better optimized website?

  • More active online?

  • Higher domain authority?

This is where you start to understand your competitive landscape, and where to improve to outrank them.

Why This Matters for Your Marketing

If you’re not visible on Google, your marketing is leaving money on the table. Organic online search drives over 1,000% more traffic than organic social media (Bright Edge). And studies show that users trust businesses that appear in the top results far more than those buried below.

Visibility = credibility.

Final Thoughts

Now that you know how to check your Google search visibility, take a few minutes to audit where you actually show up, and where you don’t. You might be surprised! When I checked my own rankings this week, I was thrilled to see Rogue Marketing show up #1 - #3 organically for “Marketing Red Deer” and “Digital Marketing Red Deer. But I also spotted opportunities for improvement in key service-based searches like SEO Red Deer and Social Media Management Red Deer, where I’m not yet cracking the top three. My Google Business profile could also use a little more work to consistently crack in the top three for service and area based searches! And that’s the point of this exercise: visibility isn’t just about being found… it’s about being found for the services you want to sell.
